  1. I found your Pioneer Journals through Pinterest and absolutely LOVE the idea! It looks like so much fun and keeping the kids engaged would be a breeze. I was wondering what you used materials/reading/unit plan for the pioneer unit. Was it something that you made up or did you find it on Teacher's Pay Teachers? I have been searching for a comprehensive unit that is realistic but also age appropriate (for 3rd/4th graders). Please let me know what you used and/or where I can find it. Thank you for your time.:)

  2. Hello,
I use a simulation by Interact. I've had it for several years and my teammates and I have tweaked it here and there to make it fit what we want our students to learn. The simulation has the students in wagon train groups, buy supplies, and choose a wagon master before they "leave". During the journey, they have to make groups decisions, deal with fate cards, and work on challenge projects to earn points to move along the trail. To supplement this I have a lot of books about the Oregon Trail and we watch a movie about it also. I've had students do reports on an Oregon Trail topic and present it.

For the journals, I have journal prompts that students write to as they travel. I'm working on a journal prompt resource to add to my TpT store this summer, so you might consider following my store. I put new resources at 50% off for the first 48 hours so you'd be able to get it at a discount when I upload it.

    I hope this helps!

    Best,
    Tammy

  3. Hello,
I would like to get more information on the habits of mind poster set you have. I see that it states 14 habits but the description has all 16. Could you clarify before I purchase.

    Thanks,
    Jen

    1. Hi Jen,
The set had 14 when I first created them. I added the other two in the spring so there are 16 posters covering the habits. I have not yet updated the cover to show the addition. I hope that helps!

  4. Hi Tammy,
I'm teaching a 3/4 this year, first time teaching Oregon Trail, and your Pioneer Journals have inspired me! Thank you for your ideas! I'm working with Bre Page (at Quatama), showed her this website, and she laughed. "I used to work with her at Jackson!" Small world!

  5. Hi Leslie! Yes, it is a very small world. :) I remember you from many district trainings. I hope you and your students enjoy the journals. They were so much fun for the kids and turned out to be great keepsakes for them. If you have any questions or need anything, please let me know.
    Best,
    Tammuy

  6. Hi. love your page. I am very interested in the unit on the orgin trail. As a child, I went on a field trip where I was able to experience those activities. How can I st this up to come to my school? Also,do you have freebies, plans or anywhere I can see your full unit? miss_booher@yahoo

  7. Hello Tia. I'm not sure how you would have someone come to your school to present information on the Oregon Trail. You might try looking for local museums that have traveling educational outreach programs. We do a simulation with our own students that my colleagues and I have created based on the Pioneers simulation from Interact. You can purchase the Pioneers simulation by going to the teachinteract.com website.
    Best of luck to you!
    Tammy
